Established in 2015, art book in China (abC) is an independent art book fair based in China. Its primary goal is to champion local artists' books and independent publications while fostering a meaningful multilateral dialogue by introducing exceptional global publishers and institutions.
Beijing and Shanghai-based design firm Studio NA.EO developed a new visual system to commemorate abC’s 5th anniversary in 2020, which embodies the flexibility of abC as an independent art organisation and its dedication to promoting art books.
An esteemed art exhibition in both Beijing and Shanghai, the abC Art Book Fair has cultivated a distinct reputation in the fields of contemporary art, design and publishing, attracting thousands of publishers, media platforms and visitors from around the world.
Studio NA.EO's design approach has consistently been rooted in fundamental logic while also evolving over time. In the case of abC, each letter – a, b, and C – represents multiple letters, forming a collection that symbolises a diverse range of individuality. This concept acts as a parallel to the unlimited potential for growth and development that each person possesses. By incorporating this idea, the overall design achieves a more dynamic and varied aesthetic, reflecting the unique characteristics and endless possibilities within abC.
The visual system developed by Studio NA.EO is based on a dot matrix that embodies the possibility of variable font patterns, expressing abC's flexibility as an independent art organisation dedicated to promoting art books. The design elements harmoniously integrate dots, lines and surfaces, expanding to every detail of the visual system. This approach conveys both the flexibility of abC and the underlying concept of "dot, line and surface" as the foundation of modern art and editorial design.
