The School of Fashion and Textiles (SFT) in Hong Kong was established in 2022 as part of the transformation of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC), which spans 65 years. Focused on an interdisciplinary approach to education, which combines design, business, and technology, SFT aims to pave the pathway to the future of fashion and textile education.
Hong Kong-based branding and design studio Toby Ng Design created the brand identity for SFT, reflecting the school's shift towards a future-focused fashion education institution.

Drawing inspiration from the world of fashion and textiles, Toby Ng Design crafted a brand identity revolving around the concept of intertwined lines represented by twisted strands that create a thread symbolising the school’s interdisciplinary and collaborative nature. The strands that form an ascending thread creates a timeline from ITC to SFT and beyond, propelling fashion and textiles into the future.
At the core of the brand identity is the cross-section of the thread, serving as the symbol for SFT. This symbol takes the form of a mannequin-like figure embellished with an assortment of textures and materials, reflecting the diversity of fashion and opportunities at SFT, and their interdisciplinary approach to education, combining design, business, and technology.
“One of the key challenges in designing for a fashion school is striking a balance between the dynamic and ever-changing trend of fashion and the long-standing reputation of the institution. We introduced multiple 3D renderings of the SFT symbol to address this challenge. This approach allowed us to maintain the authority and recognition associated with our logo while incorporating trendy and visually engaging 3D elements that reflect the evolving nature of the fashion industry.”
Toby Ng Design curated a colour palette that showcased energetic and bold hues, capturing teenage students' vibrant creativity and distinct personalities while encapsulating the essence of their individuality and creative ideas.
Striking a balance between ever-evolving fashion trends and the esteemed reputation of the institution was one of the key challenges in designing for a fashion school. Toby Ng Design addressed this by introducing a series of 3D renderings of the SFT symbol. This approach not only upholds the authority and recognition associated with the logo but infuses it with trendy and visually-engaging 3D elements reflecting the dynamic nature of the fashion industry.
