No Magic In Riso is a 360-page limited edition book, first published in 2019, that delves into the world of Risograph printing.
Taipei-based visual design laboratory O.OO designed and published the book after two years of research and experimentation, in which it explored the processes and experiences of Risograph printing, offering a valuable resource to designers, artists, illustrators, and anyone interested in working with colour.
Created over 850 days, NO MAGIC IN RISO encapsulates the art of Risograph printing, using 74 tubes of soy ink, 15 colours, 660 masters, 690,000 sheets of paper, three fans, two Risograph printers, and a team of 4 individuals. The book delves into the processes and experiences associated with Risograph printing through two years of image separation studies and experiments.
Instead of relying on wordy explanations, the book aims to convey the marvel of Risograph printing through the intricacies of its design. It acknowledges that its methods are not absolute but tools, emphasising the importance of human participation in technology, hence, the title "NO MAGIC IN RISO."
